Hilarity abounds in this Tony Award winning hit comedy which showcases three different couples successively occupying a suite at The Plaza Hotel in New York.
Sam Nash - Male, actor aged 40s-60s
Sam has just turned 50 years old, but tries to conceal this milestone birthday. He is impeccably dressed, well-groomed, and in good shape due to his obsessive dieting. He is measured, efficient, and economic by nature. He has been married to Karen for 23/24 years, but he prioritizes business over their relationship. He knows his marriage is struggling and has been having an affair with his secretary.
Karen Nash - Female, actor aged 40s-60s
Karen is 48 years old and does not try to pretend to appear any younger. She is a pleasant, affable woman who is at ease with herself. She has booked Suite 719 at the Plaza Hotel as (she thinks) that was the room in which she spent her honeymoon. Karen knows her marriage is in trouble and desperately tries to bring some romance and lightheartedness into their evening. She is teasing and playful with him, despite her growing concerns about their marriage. Karen rightly suspects that Sam is having an affair with his secretary and is relieved when he finally admits the truth. She refuses to play the role of the wronged wife and wants to regain control of the situation.
Jesse Kiplinger - Male, actor aged late 20s-40
Jesse is a fashionable “Hollywood mod” movie producer, in his 30s. He is confident and self-assured, oozing charisma. He is excited to meet up with Muriel, his old high school girlfriend, and is determined to seduce her despite her insistence that she can only stay for a short while. Jesse has forged out a successful career, but he has had three troubled marriages. His wives all had affairs and used him for his money, which has left him disillusioned and bitter about women. When he spotted Muriel in a newspaper cutting, he believed seeing her would restore his faith in women.
Muriel Tate - Female, actor aged late 20s-40
Muriel is a sweet, naive suburban housewife in her 30s from New Jersey with three children. She is extremely nervous to see Jesse, her old high school boyfriend, and it shows. Muriel has remembered exactly how long it has been since their last date and it is clear that she has followed his life and career obsessively for the last seventeen years. She is fascinated by his Hollywood lifestyle and reads every gossip page and newspaper article that she can.
Although Muriel insists that she is happy in her marriage and her life, it is clear that her marriage is troubled and she finds her escape in the gossip magazines.
Roy Hubley - Male, actor aged 40s-60s
Roy dresses elegantly but he's not too comfortable in this attire. He is a volatile, explosive man equipped to handle the rigors of the competitive business world, but he is on edge when it comes to the business of marrying off his only daughter. He is vicious and hostile when dealing with Norma, but she retaliates with her own accusations. Roy frequently loses his temper and comes close to physical violence. They are the portrait of a longstanding, unhappily married couple, fighting, cursing, and aggravating each other.
Norma Hubley - Female, actor aged 40s-60s
Normla is extremely nervous, growing increasingly panicked and overwrought as her daughter, Mimsy, will not come out of the bathroom for her wedding. Loud and melodramatic, she is convinced that she is having a heart attack. She is upset by Roy’s vicious and accusatory behavior towards her, but she fights back with her own accusations. They are the portrait of a longstanding, unhappily married couple, fighting, cursing, and aggravating each other. Roy accuses Norma of being a lousy mother, while she accuses him of being a rotten husband. It is a pattern they have fallen into and it is hard to shake.
SUPPORTING ROLES (Will be doubled)
Bellhop - Male, actor aged early 20s-early 30s
The Bellhop works at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. He is a young man who has worked there for two years and is professional and efficient. He answers Karen Nash’s questions respectfully but it is clear that he is keen to leave. Doubled with Borden and maybe waiter.
Waiter - Male, any age
The waiter serves Sam and Karen Nash dinner in their suite. He is professional to the core. However, he grows increasingly confused by the conflicting instructions from Sam and Karen.
Jean McCormack - Female, actor aged 20s-early 30s
Sam Nash’s secretary. She is a slim, attractive woman in her late twenties. She is bright and cheerful, and very good at her job. Although she apologizes to Karen for interrupting their evening, like Sam she appears to prioritize their work over sentimentality. Jean McCormack was recently divorced and, after she has left, Sam admits to having an affair with her.
Doubled with Mimsy.
