Winner of the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize, this impassioned drama highlights the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed attic. The story captures the realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief.
Suggested Playing Age: Teen to young adult (13–21)
Anne is curious, imaginative, outspoken, and full of life. She uses humor, storytelling, and honesty to cope with fear and confinement. Over the course of the play, Anne grows emotionally, gaining empathy and maturity while holding onto hope. This role requires strong memorization skills, emotional range, and the ability to carry a large portion of the show.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (30s–50s)
Otto is Anne’s father and the moral and emotional anchor of the group. He is calm, thoughtful, compassionate, and quietly authoritative. Otto mediates conflict and provides reassurance during moments of fear. This role requires warmth, emotional restraint, and a strong, grounded stage presence.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (30s–50s)
Edith is Anne’s mother — loving, anxious, and deeply affected by their situation. She struggles with constant fear and with her relationship with Anne. Edith’s journey shows the emotional toll of survival and motherhood under extreme circumstances. This role requires vulnerability and emotional honesty.
Suggested Playing Age: Teen to young adult (16–25)
Margot is Anne’s older sister — intelligent, reserved, and kind. She is responsible and composed, often serving as a quiet contrast to Anne’s energy. Though calm on the surface, Margot carries deep anxiety. This role requires subtle emotional work and strong listening skills.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (40s–60s)
Mr. Van Daan is sarcastic, stubborn, and frequently argumentative. Life in hiding amplifies his flaws, leading to tension and conflict within the group. While often sharp and difficult, his behavior is rooted in fear and survival. This is a strong character role with moments of humor and intensity.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (40s–60s)
Mrs. Van Daan is expressive, dramatic, and concerned with appearances. She often masks fear with humor, vanity, or emotional outbursts. Beneath her flamboyance is deep insecurity and desperation. This role requires strong presence, emotional range, and comedic timing.
Suggested Playing Age: Teen to young adult (15–25)
Peter is shy, awkward, and introverted, especially at the start of the play. Sensitive and thoughtful, he feels overshadowed by his parents. Over time, he grows more confident and forms a meaningful bond with Anne. This role requires vulnerability and natural emotional growth.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (45–65)
Mr. Dussel is anxious, particular, and rigid. He struggles to adjust to life in hiding and often clashes with Anne. Though sometimes comedic, his behavior stems from fear and survival instincts. This role requires strong timing and character work without exaggeration.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (20s–40s)
Miep is warm, brave, and compassionate. She risks her life to help those in hiding, bringing food, news, and a sense of hope. Though kind, she is always aware of the danger she faces. This role requires sincerity, groundedness, and emotional strength.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (30s–50s)
Mr. Kraler is serious, practical, and loyal. He helps organize the hiding place and protect those inside. Quieter than Miep, he carries significant responsibility and risk. This role requires calm authority and restraint.
Suggested Playing Age: Adult (18+)
These roles portray the threatening presence of outside authority in the final moments of the play. Though limited in stage time, they are essential to the emotional impact and power of the story. Strong physical presence and clear movement required. Actors cast as the officer roles will only be required for two rehearsals plus tech week.
